Painful feet-553

You know the feeling, you are in the store, you try on the footwear and your feet start going numb, or there are bits that hurt, the shoes feel tight. However you either think this is the best you can do or that the shoes will "stretch" to fit. Leather footwear does stretch in width however it is normally only 2-3 mm not cm!

Damage to the feet can be permanent, it's not just the hobbling to your door at the end of a day, or flicking your shoes off in the middle of an event so you can dance, or thinking you will commit murder cause of the pain in your feet.

Continuing to wear tight shoes that don't fit day after day can cause the following issues to happen and for some poor people they get more than one. Although genetics can play a part as well most foot damage happens through the footwear on your feet.

  • Bunions - this was something the older ladies had when I was growing up, due to pointy toe shoes being the trend, not to mention ladies wearing heels all the time. I am noticing a trend though of it coming back again though. A bunion is caused when pressure is placed on the toe area through there not being enough toe room, it causes the toe to go sideways towards the second toe and pushes the ball joint out of line. Some people also experience pain. The only fix if they get bad enough is surgery.
  • If your toes are crushed in your shoes with no room to wiggle then you can also cause fricton which can also result in corns. These are treatable by using corn pads from the chemist and if you wear footwear with enough room they will also not come back.
  • Hammer Toes - I see this one more in the ladies and it is usually caused through wearing high heels that are too tight in the toe box area, instead of the toes lying flat they will end up curling and one will curl over the toe of the other. Again this damage is not something that can be fixed without surgery or using aids to hold the toe in place.
  • Ingrown toenails, I have had these before in my life and they are not nice, especially if you kick your toe :-). This generally happens when the toenail has been cut short and then due to shoes not having a roomy enough toe box the shoe pushes against the toenail which causes it to grow inward into the skin = painful'
  • Finally pressure points can also cause nerve damage which is normally referred to as a neuroma which is when you get a benign growth of nerve tissue along a nerve pathway that causes pain and often a burning sensation
